ABORTION

What are some of the statistics in abortion? Since 1973, there have been 47 million abortions nationally. Tennessee has reported 444,386 abortions performed since 1978. These figures do not count out of state patients. In 2004, Tennessee reported 13,902 abortions being performed. To put these numbers in perspective, Tennessee’s population is 5.9 million people. There have been enough abortions nationally to replace everyone in this state nearly eight times. For every two babies born, another will be aborted. The abortion industry uses many arguments for abortion. I recommend going to the web site www.tennesseerighttolife.org  for a more in depth study.

Here are some statistics that I found interesting. Rape accounts for only 1% of abortions. The life of the mother and fetal abnormalities account for another 6% of all abortions. This means that 93% of abortions are used for birth control. Who obtains most abortions? They are single women, two-thirds of which are between the ages of 20 to 24, and 68% are white. These statistics dispel the myth about only poor inner city girls getting abortions.

Abortion, for now, is the law of the land whether we like it or not. As long as abortion is legal, we must strive to mitigate its damage. I am for parental consent laws that forbid minors from obtaining abortions without their knowledge. I am completely against partial birth abortions and cannot see how any sane person could want to continue this practice.

Limiting abortions to the first trimester and having a waiting period are also necessary. Full medical and psychological disclosures are needed as well. Education of alternatives such as adoption are necessary to help slow the abortion rate. Tennessee has most of these laws, but we must educate women on the consequences of abortion. Some of these consequences are guilt, sterility and even death. I know a girl who had an abortion, and I believe she was completely unaware of what was really going on.

My personal conviction is abortion is immoral except where the life of the mother is concerned. I believe everyone would be better if we used adoption more than abortion.
